Dissident Anatomy?

Posted on October 31st, 2006 in Human Rights by Jorge Luis

Bodies, The Exhibition is now showing in South Florida. This is a dubious “art” exhibition consisting of cadavers in various positions depicting everyday activities, such as sports. The cadavers belonged to Chinese citizens, of whom, as the exhibition website admits, it is not known whether they ever gave consent to have their bodies thus posthumously used. Now connect the dots with the thriving sales of Chinese prisoner organs, and like me, you may just wonder whether it falls within a reasonable realm of probability that these are the bodies of former Chinese dissidents, and if so, would you then risk supporting an exhibition that potentially exploits their misfortune?

This is a great page….here’s a sample, from The Java Programming Language:

In the index, we find (p. 579):

The book is only 595 pages long.

BMW 3-Series POC

Posted on October 31st, 2006 in Small Talk by Jorge Luis

If you’re considering getting into a BMW 3-Series coupe, DO NOT! It’s a Piece of Crap. For the sake of truth in advertising, BMW should append “POC” to the “CI” or “CCI” with which it labels its coupes. You see BMW came up with a diabolical front-bumper design that allows the car to snugly fit above the usual parking-spot stop. It’s very easy to park. However, backing out of the parking spot is impossible, IF you would also like to take your front bumper with you. You see, the car’s ground profile is high enough that it allows you to slip in, but low enough that backing out of your run-of-the-mill parking spot causes a huge racket, i.e., the sound of your bumper slowly and painfully dislodging itself from the rest of the car! Eventually, you or whoever drives your car will repeat this enough that you’ll need to replace the entire German-demon-engineered front bumper. I can hear you saying, “just don’t pull in all the way.” Hear me now and believe me later, sooner or later you’ll forget not to, and pull in all the way, even after you’ve already replaced the bumper once! It’s just something you can’t reliably remember not to do, especially if your passenger or the cell phone robs your attention the moment your pulling in. So, unless you enjoy backing into a parking spot absolutely every freaking time you park, can somehow ensure that everyone who drives your car at one point or another (valet, guy washing your car) does the same, or are willing to replace the front bumper every year and half, do not, I repeat, do not get into a BMW 3 series coupe. And leasing is not an option. Bumpers aren’t covered. And I’m not alone in experiencing this phenomenon. My brother had the same problem with his coupe. Lastly, BMW hasn’t yet figured out how not to make its windows rolling up squeal like a pig being slaughtered, or prevent the soft covers in its convertibles from leaking during heavy rains, or make all four windows go up simultaneously as one of its buttons advertises. For an allegedly luxury car, this is the ultimate driving POC.

Who says the only place to find “culture” in Miami is in the supermarket dairy aisle, as in yogurt? Check out these cultural events taking place in Miami this fall, including Shakespeare in Miami Lakes.

Quality Beef

Posted on October 8th, 2006 in Food & Wine by Jorge Luis

Winn-Dixie is now selling Naturewell Beef, which claims to provide beef from non-cannibalistic cattle. My impression is that this beef is not as good as Whole Food’s, but better than the standard, supermarket fare.

Excellent Cheeses

  1. Dodoni Feta: Don Demetrio, owner of Cafe Demetrio in Coral Gables, FL, generously let me sample this excellent Greek feta, which was perfectly salty with a goat-cheese aftertaste and went very well with olive oil, black pepper and tomatoes.
  2. Daily Bread Vlahotiri Sliced Cheese
  3. French Feta also from Daily Bread. Very creamy and not very salty.
