Proof-Positive Bubble Popped

For anyone still in denial that the housing bubble popped, consider the following comment from Countrywide’s CEO, “We are experiencing home price depreciation almost like never before, with the exception of the Great Depression.

New From Gas Chamber Records, Hitler Speaks

Posted on July 20th, 2007 in Cuba, Human Rights by Jorge Luis

I could hardly believe my eyes when I opened my inbox today and read an email alerting me to an item available at a Smithsonian Institute website, Smithsonian Global Sound. For the low price of $9.99, you can buy a CD titled “[c]he [g]uevara Speaks”, put out by Paredon Records. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this is yet another item in the long list of paraphernalia praising the Butcher of La Cabaña. che fetish is no surprise, but the name of the record label left me dumbfounded. You see the paredon is where this beloved communist murderer did his butchering; between it and the firing squad stood the victim. During castro’s reign of terror, rabid mobs would cry “Paredon, paredon!” in their blood-lust, frenzied demands for the heads of poor souls not aligned with the new powers that be. During the French revolution, the cry would have instead been “guillotine, guillitone!” The paredon was the executioner’s tool, just as were gas chambers in Nazi concentration camps. Now, would anyone in his right mind create a record label named Gas Chamber Records? Would The Smithsonian peddle its wares? Of course not, but for the victims of the Cuban revolution, Springtime for Hitler is no play within a play. It is a simple reality, constantly shoved in our faces.

They Dance Alone

The banner shown in the video above is the closing capstone to the BUCL.org Campaign for the Invisible Ones, which I proudly sponsored along with other bloggers and individuals who advocate for human rights for Cuba and the liberation of its people. The banner reads, “S.O.S. THEY DANCE ALONE IN CUBA TOO. BUCL.ORG.” It flew over Dolphin Stadium the evening The Police’s world tour played Miami. The ladies appearing in the video are The Ladies in White (Las Damas De Blanco), relatives of imprisoned political dissidents. In acts of civil disobedience, they protest the injustice perpetrated against their loved ones by silently demonstrating through the streets of Havana. In 2005, they were awarded the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, sharing the prize that year with Hauwa Ibrahim and Reporters Without Borders.

Speaking Up for the Invisible Ones

Posted on July 10th, 2007 in Cuba, Music, Politics, Human Rights by Jorge Luis

Last night, I had the privilege to participate in a vigil meant to bring to light the plight of political prisoners in Cuba. The Police’s comeback tour, which might include a stop in Havana, Sting’s past advocacy on behalf of human rights in Chile and South Africa, and his silence on this matter when it comes to Cuba prompted the vigil and bucl.org campaign. We’re appealing to Sting to speak up on behalf of Cuban political prisoners, to denounce the human rights abuses that continue to this day in Cuba, just as he denounced the same type of abuse in Chile and South Africa. Playing Havana presents Sting and The Police a perfect opportunity to speak truth to power, perhaps by inviting these guys to open the show or by challenging the castro regime to tear down the prisons.
